Print and download in PDF or MIDI Tango Etude 3. Astor Piazzolla's 3rd tango etude. This is written for a flute, but I find that it sounds better with these notes on a clarinet.

Tango-Etude No3 Astor PiazzollaPerformed by Clara Pitt (2nd Year Bachelor of Music - Sydney Conservatorium)Recorded by Luke CostelloeScore No3 click Download PDF Equipment and Specifications:Rodes Stereo Mic into Zoom H4N at 44.1KHz/24BitRodes was on Mic Stand 2-3 behind and less than 1 foot above the left shoulder mouth-piece end of flute.Studio Setup for this Recording:The Old Darlington School Room 1The aim was to get a live and lightly reverborous natural sound by recording the piece in the old school hall. I initially had the performer in the centre of the room but the sound was too wet, the hum of some audio equipment in the room could be heard, and a lot of the noise outside the room was being picked up. To eliminate these problems I moved the performer into the corner where less of the reflections were being picked up.

In the corner a shorter and less over-bearing reverb was produced. This was due some curtains and a covered harpsichord that were in close proximity. I also moved a white board from another place in the room to enclose the performer in the corner and diminish the longer reflections some more. In this position less of the noise from outside could be heard. I also turned off the audio equipment. The mic was placed 2-3 feet behind and less than one foot above the left shoulder of the performer and mouth-piece of the flute.

This was a position i decided upon after reading about some specific techniques for miking the solo flute online, and after moving the mic around listening to the sound on the day. This position removed a lot of the breath sound as well as the noise produced by the fingering of keys during the performance. It also distanced the flute sound a little, taking off some of the shrill top end.Conditions:It was a very windy day and this created a low level noise. The performer moved a little during and between each take, which caused for a slight variance in sound. The sirens of passing emergency services could be heard on the end of one of the takes but this has been dealt with accordingly. (I don't think it can be heard during any of the takes, nor in the final edit.)Only 2 hours were available between set up and pack down.Only four proper takes we're recorded because of time constraints, and the intensity and length of the piece meant the performer needed a few minutes to catch her breath in between takes.Logistics/Availability:Three recording kits were available on the day i chose to book one. However, I was recording from 1- 3pm and the kits weren't available till 3pm so i had to pick it up a day early. This meant i had to carry the kit from Uni back home, which is a 20 minute walk up Cleveland Street.

This does not usually seem too far, but with my briefcase, my weekly groceries, the recording kit, and a mic stand, it became quite a difficult task! The return to uni the next day was slightly easier since I didn't have the groceries. The performer has a very busy schedule and the Old Darlington School is quite a busy building, this made it a little tricky to find a time slot to record the performance there. I eventually found a time where both the room and the performer were free and the recording process, between setup and pack down, took no more than 2 hours. At 3:30pm i dumped the tracks onto USB in the computer labs at the Uni and then returned the kit.Problems with the Recording:Upon listening back to the recording i was concerned i had not recorded enough level. I had reduced the sensitivity of the device on the day so i did not pick up so much background noise, and because the piece was very dynamic.

My concerns prompted me to send the lecturer Damian Barbeler an email. He suggested I normalise the piece at 90% and send him a ten second snippet. I did this and he assured me the piece was loud enough. After editing together the final performance shown above, I chose to equalise the recording rather than normalise it. This managed to produce a clearer sound, which made the piece seem louder without me having to normalise it.At the end of this final edit was the sound of a passing siren. This caused me to program a faster fade than what i would have programmed if there was no siren to be heard.Problems Uploading:For some strange reason it took me several attempts to upload this recording to Soundcloud. I tried a number of formats before it finally uploaded properly.

Even though the website said it was compatible with a lot of the formats I tried, they didn't seem to be working on the day. I first tried FLAC, then Apple Lossless, which both didn't work, and then finally I tried converting from 24Bit to 16Bit and uploaded the track as an AIFF and this worked. Sound quality suffered a tiny bit.Positives:The performer was excellent so very few takes were needed.I am a friend of the performer so the recording experience was relaxed and easy going. The equipment was reliable and very easy to use.No one interrupted us in the room. The siren happened at the end of the piece rather than during!Genre.License: all-rights-reserved.
