For info, the serial number is 80062. For info, the serial number is 80062. Posted: Mar 3, 2009 9:10 AM - Quote - Report! Simonp123: Had a reply from Levinson/Christian: Dear Simon, Thanks for your E-mail and for choosing a Blade Guitar. Thsi seems to be a special model indeed, could you provide us awith a picture of the guitar so we can give you adequate information. Thanks Best regards Levinson Ltd. Christian Hatstatt. Were any significant numbers of the Blade guitars ever made in Switzerland? There were Blade guitars in the late 80's, early 90's that had something to the effect of 'designed in Switzerland' or 'Blade Designs of Switzerland' as part of their logo, while the true country of origin was noted on an easily removable sticker on the neck plate labeled 'Made in Japan'.

I started to get some issues with the switch for the VSC, and as I was not using it anyway I bypassed it (and the tone control while I was in there). I paid £530 used, and would happily pay that for another.I tried an RH4 recently (one of the early ones), and preferred the Wilkinson trem on my RH2. Used they go for anywhere from £700-£850.
Interestingly, the same pickups are used on the RH4 and RH2 now.I know I need a second guitar as a back-up, and it will take a pretty special creation to tempt me away from getting another Blade. I have 3 Blades- an early RH4, anearly 90s tele (T2 as it was then) and amid 90s Texas 62 Strat. I have 5PRS and DonGrosh as well amongs my gear.
My RH4 has been iwth my tech for a while whilst we consider the replacement pick up for the bridge, just an upgrade. Hell, I miss it more than i woulld miss any of my other high end guitars. The build quaity is superb. Making comparisons with Suhr or Andersons is difficult as Blades are different take on strats - Blades are designed to be very versatile instruments covering a greater tonal pallette, but I would put Blade up against any make. I watch out for them on ebay and notice that early RH4s are really beginning to go up in price. There was an early RH4 recently on ebay that had an asking price of £1899 - too hig, but feel that early high end Blades are beginning to be appreciated for the great guitars that they are. However there are still bargains to be had and I paid £450 for my Texas little over a year ago.
A different beast to the RH4 and not quite as refined a tone, more a rock instrument, but even that guitar is a class instrument, way ahead of a standard US strat. Surprised by comment of lacking tuning stability as have never had any problems and whilst the floating trem system on the RH4 might not be to everyones liking (no dive bombing possible) it is a system that means if a string breaks, the guitar stays in tune. Difficult to know how the RH4 could be better constructed as Gary Levinson has really thought it through. Always got confused when I saw a Panama red in blue! It's an incredible guitar (I was going to say for the money but it's actually amazing for any price!) and so versatile. It's a total go-to instrument for me and basically if I'm playing 'as me' rather than apeing someone else, it's the one I play (other than my P90 LPJ)Amazingly powerful, although I never use the boost. And that finish is utterly beautifulI have made one upgrade- a Callaham short trem arm.
The block is tool steel as standard, another example of Gary's attention to detail.

I use to own a Levinson Blade California model. Pics below.I traded it because I did not like the neck profile, but that was not a reflection of the quality, tone, or playablity of the guitar.

In all those areas it was a great guitar that was every bit the equal to a MIA Fender. My guitar was MIJ and was really well made. It is actually very hard to get any info on the guitars. If you have the serial number you can email Levinson and they will give you info on the model and build of the guitar.I was impressed with the guitar and had I not gotten such a great trade offer I probably would have kept the Blade. They make really nice stuff! But I needed a killer acoustic and that was what i was offered in trade (a $1100.00 acoustic) so I couldn't refuse.
Definitely look into it.As far as I know, Gary Levinson still owns the company and they are still headquartered in Switzerland. OK, the guitar arrived and it was packaged well.I gave it a little inspection and found only a few minor scratches in the clear coat on the back of the guitar. The guitar looks great it is a dark blue burst that looks almost black in darker light.I take off the strings so I can polish the frets and oil the fingerboard. After taking all of the string off I notice that the fretboard has begun to seperate from the neck. The glue bond is gone from the nut down to about the 5th fret. The good thing is that it is a clean seperation, there is no lacquer on the fingerboard sides so it doesn't look bad.
It looks like a cheap and easy fix.I take the guitar to a local shop and they tell me that for $25 they will glue the fingerboard back and be careful not to get any glue in the truss rod channel.I should get the guitar back on Thursday this week.Max.
